World Heritage

Pitons, cirques and ramparts of Reunion Island” have been inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2010, or 40 % of the island with an area of ​​over 100 000 ha.

Dominated by two volcanic peaks, the site has a great diversity of escarpments, gorges and forested basins that together give rise to a fabulous landscape. The Cirques: Salazie, Mafate and Cilaos, quiet small islands nestled in the green heart of the island, offer fantastic vistas of rivers and ramparts. They are a paradise for hikers and are the witnesses of the island’s creole traditions.

Saint-Denis: Main town of Reunion Island, Saint-Denis consists of beautiful creole houses, colonial buildings and a refreshing garden. Unmissable place: The State Garden, the Noor Al Islam Mosque, the Barachois and the Prefecture.

The Entre-Deux: Small village in the south of the island, this small creole village is ideal to combine rest and hiking.

Saint-Leu: Seaside village situated in the west which is becoming increasingly popular. To absolutely visit: The Kélonia Turtle Observatory. The Garden of the Mascarenes, Paragliding overview of the city, The Stella Matutina Museum, The Piton Maido. Located at an altitude of about 2 200m, you will need 1 hour to 1:30 to get there by road. The landscape is really worthy on arrival.

The Piton de la Fournaise: Threaten rarely the population, this effusive volcano is one of the most active of the planet. Located in the south of the island, you will need to pass through the Martian landscapes of the beautiful plain of Sands to get there. You can stop along the way at a place called Nez-de-boeuf for a breathtaking panorama of the valley of Rivière des Remparts. The Gardens of Perfumes and the spices garden are located in the south of the island at Saint-Philippe. The Grand Brûler, landscape located in the wild southern of Saint-Philippe, shows the volcano’s activites for the preceding years. Be careful though, because some castings are not yet cooled thoroughly.

The trekking: The Island is full of trails for all levels. You will discover unique and beautiful scenery out of reach by car. It is important to check the weather before undertaking multi-day trek and to never venture alone.

VTT: With its steep terrain, the island is an ideal place for the descent. Several tracks of different levels are present on the island.

Caving: Following volcano eruptions in previous years, the island has lava tunnels which are unique in the world. There are no particular technical difficulties to visit same. The cavities are large enough to not have to crawl. However, this activity is not recommended for claustrophobic and people with health problems. It is possible to visit them accompanied by a state certified guide. Do check with the tourist offices.

Climbing and mountaineering: The climbers or even the alpinism can find the list of the tiered cliffs on the website of the French federation of mountain climbing. Must see: Niagara waterfall in Sainte -Suzanne, the Yellow Flowers-site (Cilaos).

Suggested Routes

Saint-Denis: Walk in the city center. Visit the mosque Noor al-Islam, the Garden State, Creole houses of Paris Street, the Prefecture and finally have a break at the Barachois with the overlooking on the famous coast road.

St. Paul: Visit the open market (every Friday), Stroll at Maïdo (for a clear view of Mafate, it is advisable to arrive in the morning), complete with a relaxing swim in the white sandy lagoon of Hermitage and Saline.

The Piton de la Fournaise: Hike around the crater Dolomieu in good weather. (For non – walkers there are beautiful panorama view even without walking), minute stop at the Nez-de-boeuf to enjoy the view, visit the ‘citée des Volcans’ on the ‘Plaine des Cafres’.

Saint- Leu : Overview of the city paragliding , visit the observatory Kelonia and Stella Matutina museum then have a nap on the beach.

The South: Visit the Langevin river and its many waterfalls in Saint-Joseph, stop at the Notre Dames des laves church, visit the lava flow in the ‘Grand Brûlé’ on the RN2, lunch break at Anse des Cascades in the shade of palm trees, visit the Sainte-Anne Cathedral. While return back, enjoy the sunset over the site of Grand Anse.

Cilaos: Visit the village: wine tasting, Creole huts … Outdoor activities (hiking, canyoning …) and wellness in the mountains and the Baths of Cilaos. For major sportsperson, hiking the Piton des Neiges. We advise you to spend a night there in order to enjoy the change of the scenery.

Saint-Pierre: Showman Market on Saturday for shopping and souvenirs, visit the city center and the port, shopping and beach.

The Plains: Direction towards the Plaine des Cafres to the site of l’horloge with a view on the village of Grand Bassin, Plaine des Palmistes and its green landscapes. ((Multiple opportunities to make short walks once there).

The Entre -Deux: Dimitile Hike (Possibility to go by 4×4) or other discovery of the Creole village and the local specialties and rest on the black sand beach at Etang-Salé.

The East: Direction to the Niagara waterfall in Sainte-Suzanne, visit the cirque de Salazie, the village and its specialties, visit the Mare à poule d’eau, hike to Mafate.

Shopping

If you want to bring back the Bourbon Vanilla, you will find it everywhere on the Island. You can buy also rum and mixed rum. If you prefer wine, you may bring wine from Cilaos.

Enjoy being at Reunion Island to buy lots of spices from the markets. You may also bring tamarind paste and manioc starch, used in many recipes of the Island, without forgetting to mention the many seasonal fruits that garnish the market stalls.

If you go to Cilaos, do bring back the lace from the house of embroidery. Tablecloths or placemats, there’s something for everyone’s choice. You can also buy colourful traditional clothes and pareos.

Finally, you can buy the famous stones of Piton de la Fournaise and you can purchase a music CD for your friends.

And do not commit the mistake of bringing back corals: guaranteed fine and above all, it is this type of habit that destroyed a large part of the Island’s coral.
